Die Geschichte der TRAMAG beginnt Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts in Berlin. Dort wird Hans Magnus 1881 in eine Familie jüdischen Glaubens geboren. Er wächst in gutbürgerlichen Verhältnissen auf, entscheidet sich aber gegen die Karriere im Bankhaus Gottschalk & Magnus, dessen Mitteilhaber sein Vater Julius Magnus ist und lässt sich stattdessen zum Ingenieur ausbilden.
